Walter Leslie Wilmshurst was an English Freemason and mystic who wrote many influential works on those subjects at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. While brilliant, he wrote at a different time and from a different perspective than many of us may be used to. Therefore, though his ideas are no less salient now than then, much of what he wrote can be hard to understand for the 21st century reader. As one new Mason put it to the Master of his Lodge, “Wilmshurst is great, but whenever I read him I feel like I’m being hit over the head,” referring to the difficulty he had with the archaic style.
